Ebonics

Hi all,

Interesting discussion today, thanks for that. I wanted to ask two questions that might provoke some discussion here.

1. Does the dominant bloc (essentially white America) have a responsibility to speakers of Black English Vernacular to create educational bridges to Standard American English? Why or why not?

2. Should all speakers of Standard American English study Black English Vernacular in school? Why or why not?

Have at it,
Tiffany

To answer the first quesiton, yes I do. I understand that many white americans feel that it's not "our/their promblem" that black english speakers can't really understand our speaking ways. But it's our responsibilty to respect those of black english and help them understand. It may seem like a hassle by many, but it's the right thing to do.

For the second question, I do think it would be a good idea for white standard english and black english to be studied together in school. Mostly because kids are the future, and I think that if they understood the matter at hand at their age, but the time society is theirs, they'll make a difference for the better. They'll be the ones that will help others see the good in it. I can't think of a reason why it shouldn't be.
