Hello all,
Here is the question for this blog:
Over the past couple of weeks, we've looked at different varieties of English that have grown out of language contact. Specifically, we've talked about Black English Vernacular (Ebonics) and Spanglish. Other variations are 'Chinglish,' 'Konglish,' and other language hybrids.
Some of the posts in the last round indicated that Ebonics was not a dialect of English, but rather was 'slang' or was a reduced or less intelligent form of Standard English. I'd like us to discuss this more.
Are these hybrids language varieties or are they slang? Are they full language systems or are they reduced or less intelligent forms of Standard English? In your response, be sure that you indicate why you think this, based on what you've learned in class so far about language and society.
Remember, you need to do your first post by Sunday night and then respond to two other entries by Tuesday before class.
Thanks,
Tiffany

I think that all these varieties of English are just that, a variety of languages mixed in with the standard English language canged and modified to fit the language use, and or style of the ethnicity using it. With that being said you can see that words taken oyt of context to mean something else such as "bad" meaning "good" or "TIGHT" meaning cool" which come from black english is nothing more than a slang on the English language. With different ethnicities doing this to thousands of English words, the words are still english but when used to mean something else it is nothing more than slang.
I will agree with "gallacmic" that when different ethnicities use certain words from the standard english language, they sometimes modify the word(s) to help engage the listener. I also feel that society as a whole has the power to establish what constitutes "Slang". Before this class, I would of said it was slang, but after looking more into it all, I now understand that all these words are still standard words, and to say that they're less intelligent is wrong.
